Because of the pandemic, we know that many of us have been experiencing working from home. For many, working from home comes with many inconveniences: social isolation, lack of access to workspaces, and miscommunication. However, it has also introduced plenty of positives: judgment-free fashion choices, cutting commute time, and a lot more quality time with our animal companions. One silver lining during this pandemic is that there has been a dramatic increase in pet adoptions. More people are craving companionship, and are more willing to rescue and adopt cats and dogs during quarantine. And while it may seem like a good idea to add a new member to the family, it’s important to organize your schedule so that it won’t be too chaotic. For example, pet care should always be scheduled around your workday. Unexpected calls and meetings will always pop up, but you’ve probably got a good sense of your daily schedule. For both pets and people, a predictable schedule can help to limit stress. Where possible, blend your schedule with your pet’s. Instead of trying to get your attention during important calls and meetings, they’ll come to expect it during specific windows of time. Also, make sure to plan additional pet breaks. Your pet will appreciate the extra affection, and you’ll enjoy some time away from your desk.
Another thing to keep in mind is to enjoy working with your pets. Never reprimand or isolate them to punish them for workday distractions. Try to incorporate them into your workflow by providing them with their own space. If your cat is mirroring you while you work (by sitting on your hands and keyboard), give them an open area with their own toys. Studies show that working with your pet can help to reduce stress. Even a few minutes of quality time with a dog or cat can have therapeutic benefits, alleviating anxiety and even lowering your pressure. Researchers have also found that pets boost our sense of well-being and creativity. These are important for any job because they can help improve our efficiency and problem solving skills. It’s amazing because pets can clear our minds from anxiety and stress so that we can tackle work problems more effectively. Next time you feel stressed out, try taking a quick break while playing with your pet. You will most likely be able to work through any issue with a clearer mind. This can help with writer’s block as well. There is an abundance of research on the relationship between pets and mental health that should be taken seriously. Humans don’t deserve animals, and should always treat them with love and care. Reference Bruner, R. (2020). How pets are taking their thrones as the stars of the work-from-home paradigm right now.
